What is the CHAdeMO 3.0 protocol?
CHAdeMO 3.0 is the first publication of the CHAdeMO-side protocol for next generation ultra high power EV charging standard called Chao]i. The Chinese version of Chaoji(under the GB/T communication protocol) is expected to be released in 2021

Backward ompatibility-CHAdeMO 3.0 compliant vehicles will be backward compatible with existing fast charging standards(CHAdeMo, GB/T and possibly CCS), ie todays DC chargers will be able to charge the new ChaoJi EVs using an adaptor.

Existing CHAdeMO and GB/T EVs are not allowed to use any adapters, so they will need to use the dual chargers during the transition period. Source
What is Chaoji and Why is it needed?
Chao]i is the working name of CHAdeMO & GB/T-harmonised DC fast charging standard, that is currently under development by the CHAdeMO association in alliance with China Electricity CounciL (CEC). The project was started when China and Japan agreed to co-develop this charging technology, back in 2018
China is the world’s largest EV market and is currently using the GB/T standard, whereas CHAdeMo (though present worldwide) has a monopoly in Japan. OEMs in the US and Europe mostly use CCS as fast charging standard. The main motivation behind the development of ChaoJi protocol is the much needed standardisation in the diverse charging standards.
Will India participate in the advancement of this pioneering charging technology?
ChaoJi project has developed into an international collaboration with significant contributions from players in Europe, Asia, North America and Oceania. Successful demonstrations of the protocol have also been conducted in a test lab in Japan, according to a statement published by the CHAdeMO
Association in February
At present, the electric cars in India( Hyundai Kona, Tata Nexon EV and MG ZS EV)use the CCS 2 standard for DC fast charging. However, as per CHAdeMO website, India is expected to join other countries in supporting and helping develop the harmonised ChaoJi standard. So, we will watch the developments in the space to comment on India’s role.
When Will CHAdeMO 3.0 powered vehicles hit the road?
The testing requirements for CHAdeMO 3.0 specification are expected to be issued within a year
The first batch of ChaoJi EVs will likely be commercial vehicles and are expected to be launched in 2021, followed by other vehicles including passenger EVs. The ultra-fast charging technology will be specifically useful for vehicle types such as electric buses and trucks that have large capacity battery packs and hence will benefit more from reduction in charging time. The high charge rate of ChaoJi standard will allow Long range EVs to fully charge in 15 minutes, taking the experience of refuelling an EV closer to an ICE vehicle
